Social Studies 9

In this course we will explore the geographic and cultural landscape of Canada by examining Canadian regional geography, the Aboriginal communities which inhabited the various regions of Canada, the founding of New France, and the conquest of British North America. In Term 2 we will then switch our focus to Europe and explore the political and economic changes of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries and examine how revolution, nationalism and industrialization have shaped the world in which we now live.

Society & Culture in North America & Europe from 1500 - 1815

Topics

Enlightenment/Modern AgeThis topic will examine the growth of the power of kings, as well as the territories controlled by them. We will also examine people’s changing views on religion, politics, and the perception of the world around them.
Regional Geography of Canada This topic is an overview of the physical regions of Canada
1st Nations of Canada This topic will explore the aboriginal peoples of Canada prior to European colonisation.
Empire of New France This topic will examine European exploration of North America, the development of the colony of New France, and its British conquest
European Exploration/Fur Trade This topic explores fur trade across North America with the establishment of the Hudson’s Bay Company and its rivals.
British North America/American Revolution This topic will focus on the Quebec Act, the American Revolution, the United Empire Loyalists, and the War of 1812: those events which shaped the political landscape of North America as we know it today.
English Civil War This topic will explore the growth of democracy and the fight for civil rights
in England as it evolved into a constitutional monarchy.
French Revolution This topic will examine the events leading to the French Revolution, and its
contributions to the popular idea of nationalism.
Napoleon This topic will focus on Napoleon’s reign and its impact on the face of Europe.
Industrial Revolution This topic will focus on the changing nature of work through the rise of
modern industry and the effects it had on English society and politics.

Your final grade will be an average of terms 1 & 2.
• Homework is due at the beginning of class. Late homework will receive a zero.
• All assignments are given a formal due date on which they must be submitted. In the event that an assignment is late, it will be penalised as follows:
1 day late >>> minus 20%
1 class late (i.e. 2 days late) >>> minus 40%
More than 1 class late >>> zero

I am available for clarification/extra help by appointment or immediately after class, and am entirely happy to answer whatever questions you may have. Your success, in every sense of the word, is my utmost concern. That stated, be aware that part becoming a young adult is recognising that ultimately, it is up to you at the end of the day.
