Accelerated Social Studies 9/10
Socials 9/10 Honours will encompass the study of history, geography and economics. The historical component of the course will focus on the political, economic and social development of North America in light of the changes taking shape in Europe with regards to revolution, nationalism and industrialization. The geographical component will examine Canada’s regional diversity along with its economic and social implications. The economic component will serve as an introduction to the study of economics with an examination of the economy of Canada, B.C. and global economic trends. In addition to the textbooks, Crossroads and Horizons, you will be expected to utilize library resources, the Internet and GIS software.

| Modern Age & the English Civil War | Explores the changes sweeping Europe after the renaissance, growth of democracy in England and the fight for civil rights as England evolved into a constitutional monarchy.

This topic will examine the events leading to the French Revolution and how Napoleon domination of Europe lead to nationalism. |
| Industrial Revolution |
This topic will focus on the changing nature of work through the rise of modern industry and the effects it had on the western world |
| First Nations &European Contact |
Introduction to the different Aboriginal peoples of Canada, effects of European contact & the colony of New France |
| The Fur Trade |
This unit explore the expansion of the fur trade across north America with the establishment of the Hudson’s Bay company and North West Company. Major explorers will also be studied. |
| British North America & American Revolution |
This topic will focus on the Fur Trade, British conquest of Quebec, the American Revolution & the Loyalists, and the War of 1812 |
| Confederation |
Immigrant experience to Upper & Lower Canada and the road to responsible government and independence from Britain |
| Development of the West |
Examines the decline in the fur trade and the effects this had on Aboriginals, Métis and European settlers, The development of the CPR and British Columbia’s entry into confederation. |
| Physical Geography of Canada |
Overview of the physical regions Canada including the processes that formed them including tectonics, weathering & erosion, biogeography, weather and climate as well as mapping skills |
| Canadian & BC Economies |
Introduces basic concepts of economics as well as an overview of the economic regions of Canada and British Columbia |

* All students must write both term exams to receive credit for Socials 9 and Socials 10
* Students must maintain an average of 80% in order to remain in the accelerated social class. Students must have a final mark 73% or greater to receive credit for both Social studies 9 & Socials studies 10.
